Thank-Mas

Monday, November 27th, 2006
For years now the Lewis family has been celebrating a family tradition that I have recently started referring to as THANK-MAS. As the name would imply, it is a cross between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Simply put, we celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas with my side of the family all on the same weekend. This was not always the case. For years we would make the trip twice within a month’s time to celebrate the two holidays separately. At some point in the history of this celebration, it hit me that we were doing more traveling than celebrating. So much time was spent packing and unpacking that we seemed to have very little time to enjoy Christmas at home. I eventually broached the subject with my mom, and although she was disappointed she understood, and a new tradition began – THANK-MAS. Now even that tradition is giving way to the times, as my own children and their significant others are finding it hard to go to Tennessee every Thanksgiving. For them, THANK-MAS may have to occur every other year. The point for all of us today is that traditions change – truth DOES NOT – but tradition does. A lack of flexibility around the holidays can not only make you miserable, but those around you. The true meaning of Christmas is not about when or where, or even how, you enjoy the holidays; but rather, it is about a Savior who entered this world and went to the cross that we might know what it is to be called the children of God. Amen and Amen. Happy Thank-mas, Bro. James

We Owe Him All Our Praise and Thanksgiving

Sunday, November 19th, 2006
TurkeyHappy Thanksgiving Week everybody! Our God is so very good and we realize we owe Him all our praise and thanksgiving when we look past all the minor pain and inconveniences we all experience. I do not know about you guys, but I am most thankful that through the gift of Jesus, I am already living in eternity and all the bad stuff here on earth are just temporary speed bumps on my trip to Heaven. Look past your salvation this week and you will see that God has given you much more than you deserve! (more…)

From the West Bank

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006
This Sunday afternoon we will gather back in this place to “officially” dedicate these facilities to the Lord. I say, “officially,” because for many of us a kind of private dedication has already taken place. For years now, we have sought the Lord’s blessing as we have walked the grounds of this place prior to, during, and even after construction. I believe most would agree that the Lord has already moved in, and today we are simply saying that we want Him to continue to move through us to accomplish His will. The service is scheduled at 3:00 this Sunday afternoon in hopes that other churches will join us for this celebration. The dedication will serve as our evening service. Let’s fill this place a second time today as a testimony to our community that we are willing to be His hands, His feet, and His voice in this world. We are, after all, called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Bro. James

PB110056 We had a great time with John and his friends this weekend. He is a gifted musician, speaker, vocalist and ventriloquist. He uses these gifts to share the good news of Jesus Christ. He has been in the field of vocational evangelism since 1986. He has traveled all over the United States and British West Indies, as well as working with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. He has produced three children’s videos and four compact disc recordings.

Soaked to the Bone

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006
It’s early Monday morning and I am sitting on my screen porch listening to it rain. Now that I think about it, it was raining last week while I was writing my article. Although it is a bit nippy, I am bundled up and sitting out here because I love the sound of rain on this metal roof. It is especially nice, due to the fact that it is a sound that has been pretty sparse over the course of the summer. You may have groaned when you woke up this morning and heard the rain; but the fact is, we need it. It has been a long, hot, and very dry season. All summer I worked at trying to keep my plants alive. I filled water buckets, I moved hoses around, and I left sprinklers on. All that time I knew that rain would come, but until then I just faithfully kept watering. Maybe today you are feeling the effects of some kind of spiritual drought in your own life. I encourage you not to give up, just remain faithful and look to the Lord. The rains will come. The lack of rain may be God’s way of testing you or preparing you for the next step in your spiritual walk. I sense that DeSoto Hills is experiencing God’s blessed rain right now. May we soak it in, so that we might sprout up and produce much spiritual fruit for His Glory. Bro. James

Good Cooks, Great Atmosphere and New Friends

Sunday, November 5th, 2006
PotluckWas Sunday a great day or what? A full classroom, a full worship service, and a full belly among friends. Does it get much better than that? We had a great picnic at the Adkins house…it has been much too long since we had a social and I forgot how much fun they are. Bill and Debra, thanks so much for opening your home to our class family! The kids seemed to have had a blast, and it was a reminder of how many good cooks we have in this group. I hope we all start getting together more often like that because it is a great atmosphere for us to get to know our new friends that are coming into our family and a chance to catch up on our long time friends. If you were not there, please know that we missed your company and look forward to spending time with you at the next gathering. And speaking of the next gathering, has anyone started making plans for a Christmas Party….anyone want to step up and accept the role as our social coordinator? Let Gary and the class know if you have a heart for this ministry. (more…)
