Let Freedom Ring

On July 1st, 1863 a battle began around a small Pennsylvania town that would end up claiming the largest number of causalities of the Civil War.  Between 46,000 and 51,000 Americans were lost in this three-day battle.  In November of that same year, President Abraham Lincoln gathered at the battlefield with others to dedicate a National Cemetery to honor the fallen.  In his address to those attending the dedication he stated:

“The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.”

The 16th President of the United States underestimated the effect his words would have that day.  Not only would the Battle of Gettysburg be remembered as a decisive turning point in the war, but the President’s words serve to inspire countless generations to remember what it means to be an American.

“It is for us, the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion; that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

In many ways the work of freedom is still “unfinished”.  There are battles being waged in our nation’s capital that I believe will have monumental impact on the future of these United States of America.  Your voice needs to be heard, because your voice is important.  Lincoln understood what perhaps some modern day politicians have forgotten.  We need to remind them that this is still a “government of the people, by the people, for the people.”  Listed below are the names and contact information for OUR representatives in Washington.   Let freedom ring.
