As most of you already know, I am not an avid sports fan. It is not something I grew up with, and unlike others, it’s not something I ever really grew in to. I appreciate the passion and pleasure these events bring others, but it is just not a world I live in or know much about. I cannot “talk the talk” and I sure can’t “walk the walk”. However, recently that reality has been changing ever so slightly due to the fact that I Kathy and I have joined and are actually attending a fitness center. Now before you jump to any conclusions, joining the gym has not made me a great athlete. Working out may enhance the ability you have, but if you don’t have the coordination to “play ball”, just being in shape is not the issue. What has been changing over the past few months is my knowledge of sports due to the fact that ESPN is playing sports highlights every morning during my workout. Within a short span of time, I am able to experience a week’s worth of the best, and sometimes the worst, that sports has to offer. I read the stats, see the plays, and hear the commentaries. In short, my “talk” has changed, but that’s about all. I can carry on a sports conversation as long as it does not stray too far from the highlights. In reality, it’s all pretty shallow. Perhaps today you are catching enough church highlights to carry on a conversation, but deep down, your heart is not in it. Church, like my sports highlights, is something you catch on the run as you are doing other things. Let me encourage you this day to slow down long enough to observe and maybe even join the team. The highlights may make the news, but it’s all the stuff that goes on in between that really wins the game.
Let’s play ball,
